DAMOCLES over Europe

Ziel

The "DAMOCLES Over Europe" project aims to enhance the existing DAMOCLES Exhibition being developed in the context of the DAMOCLES IP project, and to provide the logistical, language and technical support to allow the finalised scientific exhibition on research on sea-ice conditions in the Arctic, and their relationship with the ocean and the atmosphere), to tour around Europe, with the support of DAMOCLES scientific partners, the European Commission, and selected museums in the chosen cities. DAMOCLES is a major EU research project in the Arctic, which will coincide with the International Polar Year 2007-2008. The Arctic Ocean system plays a key part in Europe's climate.

The impact of climate change will also be felt first and foremost in this region. Scientific activity in the Arctic will be aiming at understanding the likely consequences of changes in hydrological cycles, loss of ice cover, flow rates of ocean currents. The DAMOCLES exhibition will be developed on the basis of the results and findings of the DAMOCLES project, (already funded by the European Commission under FP6) which aims to collect integrated data on the Arctic ice-ocean-atmosphere system, in order to improve predictive models, allowing a better understanding of interactions with climate. The 46 members of the DAMOCLES consortium will contribute to the Exhibition, as well as helping to provide local points of contact.

The International Polar Foundation has the in-house resources and competences to adapt the exhibition to meet the requirements of each country to which it will travel, as well as to coordinate its displacements throughout Europe. The IPF has offices in Brussels, London, Paris and Geneva, and will benefit from the input from these sources for coordinating exhibition support activities, and managing partnerships with leading European polar institutes, researchers and museums. 10 cities have been selected for the touring exhibition during 2007 and 2008
