Process visualisation and analysis Endoscope System

Objective

Advanced materials offer huge potential for Europe in terms of enabling the development of new added-value products. However, a significant barrier to realising that potential is the lack of suitable processing technologies necessary for their economic large-scale manufacture. Specifically, there is an increasing requirement for versatile in-situ process equipment that can be used for real-time monitoring of the particulate flow systems, which are essential in the manufacture of many advanced materials and pharmaceuticals. However, these fluid flows are frequently found in hostile and inaccessible environments. Existing analytical techniques such as high- resolution microscopy and flow velocity mapping require large, expensive, complex and delicate laboratory instruments that cannot be used in these conditions.

PROVAEN will develop a radical solution to this problem, capable of operating in harsh and inaccessible environments, thus enabling effective product development, precise optimisation of material proper ties and process control and fault diagnosis. This will be achieved through the development of component technologies to enable the application of advanced laser-based particle analysis techniques via endoscopic probes, interfacing with a simple-to-use, portable system, enabling routine and fast application inside actual process equipment. The fluid flows we will address consist of liquid or gas phase (or both), and the particles within them may exist as solids, liquids or gases.

The performance of the final product is often critically dependent on the physical properties of the particle as well as the chemical composition, and both the physical and chemical properties are critically influenced by the nature of the particle flow patterns within the process. PROVAEN will thus create entirely new markets, and enable the economic manufacture of new advanced materials, by taking particle characterisation tools out of the laboratory and into the production line.
