Objetivo Innovative micro-optical components for future personal diagnosis systems, optical boards, and food quality control devices, integrate metal nano-films deposited on polymer micro-structures to implement mirrors, spectrometer-elements and wave-guides. The investigation of the fatigue behaviour of such systems under thermal cycling is essential for the prediction and the improvement of their reliability. The project objective is to ensure thermal cycling stability of micro-optical components by a new accelerated fatigue testing and the development of a method for lifetime prediction. For fatigue testing up to some thousand cycles, the thermal cycling has to be replaced by a proper mechanical cycling. The failure of the component must be detected in situ in order to determine the lifetime as a function of the loading amplitude. The fatigue behaviour will be modelled to generalise the experimental results. A constitutive modelling of the inelastic mechanical behaviour of the film and polymer materials will allow computing the distribution of the film deformation by finite element simulations. This approach will be applied to more complex micro-optical components with three-dimensional structures under cyclic thermal loading. On the basis of the fatigue model and t he deformation simulations, a prediction of the lifetime will result, that will be compared to a verification experiment. This project will be carried out in collaboration with the Institute for Materials Research II, which has high reputation in the field of micro- and nanotechnology, with focus on structural mechanics and failure. This cooperation will allow me to extend my knowledge to the mechanical and fatigue testing of nano-scaled thin films, in combination with constitutive modelling of inelastic met al and polymer materials. At the same time I will gain experience and reputation as a partner for other European collaborations. The developed network will strengthen my future career as a scientist.
