Bio-mimetic sensors design for food-borne Pathogens Detection: A mixed computational and experimental approach

Objectif

Foodborne pathogens are a grave and acute global problem. Their elevated possibility of dissemination represents a serious danger for the health and turns out evident the importance of their rapid monitoring. The problem of the Foodborne pathogens has provoked and provokes great interest from national and international authorities.

The idea at the base of the proposed study will be to develop bio-mimicking receptors for the development of affinity sensors for this class of undoubtedly toxicity. In this research the computational chemistry will be implemented in the development of artificial bioreceptors (e.g. oligonucleotides and oligopeptides) as a mimic of the biological binding site. Databases of biological compounds will be created and screened for affinity against the contaminants. This will consequently result in libraries of affinity biomimetic receptors.

The obtained results will represent the basis for the design and development of artificial bioreceptors to be used as mimic of antibodies in the affinity sensor design for Foodborne pathogens monitoring. These will then be screened in laboratory against the target using the common affinity sensors equipments (surface plasmon resonance or piezoelectric microbalance). The results of this research can easily lead to new receptors with high affinity for these contaminants.

Strategies based on biomimetic receptors, which work as mimicking the biological binding site, can overcome the disadvantages of biological materials (unstable, expensive to produce) and can match the continuous trend to reduce the use of animals for the production of biological reagents.
