Ion Cyclotron resonance Fourier transform mass Spectrometry

Obiettivo

The protein expression by itself and the dynamics during disease are at the moment of major biochemical and medical interest. Mass spectrometry is one of the disciplines, which has allowed the study of proteins in that context. The demand for even more sophisticated and more expensive instrumentation such as the Fourier transform Ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometers (FTICR) has increased due to the ever growing need to study intact proteins and their interactions with other proteins and ligands. Only a handful of such instruments exist in the European union while a larger number exists in the Unites states of America providing the USA with a leading edge in the study of intact proteins by mass spectrometry.

An FTICR instrument with the capacity to detect and isotopicaly resolve intact proteins has been recently purchased by the host institute in the Czech republic with funds allocated by the Czech government who immediately recognised the potential and the benefits such analytical capacity will bring. This is the only instrument that has been purchased by any of the new entrants of the European Union and is expected to increase competitiveness of the EU in relation to other major players such as USA and Japan in biochemistry and drug development.

The host institute will serve the research and analytical needs of the Czech republic and the neighbouring countries such as Poland, Slovakia and Hungary. Success to the large task undertaken by the Institute of microbiology in the Czech republic on providing regional mass spectrometry expertise can be ensured if technical know-how on the operation of such instrumentation and managerial expertise on operating facilities of that scale is transferred by another institute, which has fulfilled a similar role in another member state. The training offered in FTICR at the University of Warwick (a Marie Curie training site) conforms to the highest standards and is being recognised as a centre of excellence worldwide.
