Objective Dr Migaud and colleagues, all academic medicinal synthetic chemists at Queen's University Belfast (Northern Ireland, academic partner), in collaboration with GlaxoSmithKline (Stevenage, UK, Industrial partner via Dr McDonald) seek financial support to host an Early Stage Research Training programme for four post-graduate researchers (36 months each) who would pursue a PhD training programme in Organic and Medicinal Chemistry at QUB/GSK and for the equivalent of four visiting EST fellows (12 months each) enrolled in a PhD programme in another EU or affiliated state university. The principal objective of the proposed activities is to develop a unique environment for innovative training of chemists in order to facilitate their integration to the ever-evolving world of interdisciplinary research at the Pharmaceutics and Life Science interface. To achieve excellence in interdisciplinary research of this type, hands-on and taught training activities will maximise acquisition of expertise in the fields of organic synthesis, medicinal chemistry, enzymology, biology and biotechnology, to help the fellows attain fundamental understanding in:- Design of inhibitors and/or ligands based on structural knowledge - Development of organic synthetic methodologies- Analysis of biological results and iterative design of new compounds- Prediction of biological activities based on structural data- Design of antiproliferative agents based on pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics and toxicological results. The collaboration between QUB and GSK achieved through this programme will also maximise the transfer of research competencies between the academically-based medicinal chemistry research laboratories where synthetic methodologies are devised and the pharmaceutical industry where high through-put approach is the driving force, thus exploiting European research excellence by promoting integrated research projects.
