A European research training site for the design and synthesis of novel Neuroprotective and Hypoglycaemic Agents through a multi-disciplinary approach

Objective

EURODESY focuses on establishing a European Research Training site for the development of new agents for potential therapeutic intervention in neurodegenerative diseases and type 2 diabetes mellitus.

The project aims to provide research training in the design and synthesis of novel antioxidants, neurosteroids, and cannabinoids, as neuroprotective agents, and thiosemicarbazones, 1,2,4-oxadiazoles of b-D-glucose derivatives and indole-imidazole hybrids, as potential hypoglycaemic drugs.

This will be achieved by integrating multi-disciplinary fields encompassing synthetic organic and pharmaceutical chemistry, X-ray crystallography, biophysics, biological assessment and computational chemistry, in a joint effort under an efficient management structure.

EURODESY objectives will be supported by the researchers at the National Hellenic Research Foundation (NHRF) in an attempt to develop a new generation of multi-skilled, and highly qualified scientists. Trainees will be equipped with multidisciplinary outlook and skills in order to shape the future of European research excellence in academia and industry.

They will be trained in synthetic methodologies of organic, pharmaceutical and organometallic chemistry and in X-ray crystallographic, biophysical, biological and computational methods with the aim of facilitating the design and synthesis of new chemical entities as potential drugs. This training will be reinforced by familiarisation with industrial procedures for the manufacture of pharmaceuticals.

The integration o f this multidisciplinary expertise within the NHRF will significantly enhance its existing scientific output in pharmaceutical development and health and strengthen its competitive position as a European centre of excellence in research areas of major socio-economic importance.
