Palaeoecology, Archaeology and Evolutionary Origins

Objetivo

PALAEO - Palaeoecology, Archaeology and Evolutionary Origins - is an interdisciplinary training centre for the recovery of information about past peoples and their environment. It reflects European research strength particularly concentrated at York.

The PALAEO EST comprises a collaboration between the Centre for Human Palaeoecology, BioArch (biomolecular analysis in archaeology and geochemistry) and the primate Functional Morphology and Evolution Group. PALAEO investigates the prehistory and early history of humanity as individuals, as populations, as actors in past ecosystems, and as an evolving species.

Sources of evidence are the excavated remains of humans, the associated remains of other species, their palaeo-environments and the biomolecular record of such matters as diet and phylogeny. The scientific quality of the research training is underpinned by the breadth, depth and diversity of experience of the scientific staff and by numerous national, European and international collaborations. The technological quality of the research training is assured by access to outstanding laboratory and analytical facilities.

The size and scope of PALAEO and its support Departments allows the EST to offer tailored training. Research students within PALAEO will benefit from diverse training schemes offered by the University and will have the opportunity to attend appropriate workshops and courses, and to produce the EST textbook.

PALAEO will hasten the integration of this research area within Europe at a time when an understanding of the response of people to environmental change has never been more important.
