Vehicle-rail interaction modelling

Objectif

In this project MER MEC targets to acquire the skills required in order to develop a numerical model able to simulate the dynamic interaction between the railway vehicles and the track system. This model will use experimental data acquired with optoelectronic systems developed by MER MEC regarding both track geometry, rail profile and wheel profile measurement.

These infrastructure and vehicle data are acquired in a research project already in progress, named RAILSAFE. The data modelling will be, on the other hand, the objective of VERA. Damage mechanism such as surface cracks, plastic deformations and wear, can significantly reduce the service life of railway tracks and rolling stock; they also have a negative impact on the rolling noise as well as on the riding comfort.

A proper understanding of these damage mechanisms require a detailed knowledge of physical interaction between vehicle and rail; furthermore, demands for higher train speeds implies that the consequences of larger contact forces between wheel and rail must be thoroughly investigated. At the moment, dynamic contact problems can be solved only by computer means, for the reason of complexity of phenomena that occur in High Speed processes.

The development of an integrated model, which takes in account the full interaction between vehicle and tracks and which allows to achieve a good correspondence between measured and calculated responses, will enrich the range of the tools that MER MEC can offer its customers in the railway monitoring and maintenance sector.

The total number of person-months required is 24: 12 months for an experienced researcher and 12 months for a more experienced researcher. The project includes six key tasks, which collectively constitute a total systems approach to the understanding of the train-track interaction and to the implementation of a simulation model for the description of the dynamic behaviour of track and vehicle.
