Objetivo This proposal will bring to the EU a most talented Russian researcher with a strong background in heterocyclic chemistry, and to use his expertise in a ped with the synthesis and properties of new heterocyclic liquid crystals. In one part, the work will exploit the availability of precursors to symmetric and unsymmetric di- and tri-substituted phenanthrolines to realise high birefringence materials with negative dielectric anisotropy, while in another, bent-core disubstituted phenanthrolines will be obtained as shape-complementary, dipolar system. The third aspect of the project will employ new synthetic approaches to cyanopyridines developed by the applicant to realise new families of strongly dipolar liquid crystals. It should be noted that the use of a ph enanthroline core in new in liquid crystal systems and offers a number of attractive structural possibilities as outlined in the application. It is planned that the work carried out under this programme will form the basis for an ongoing collaboration between applicant and host once the fellowship is ended. The research area is highly topical as liquid crystals represents an area of real strength within the EU, and new generation displays are emerging based on EU-derived materials and technology. The host group is part of a major UK-based consortium on liquid crystal technology, and access to its meetings will develop a broad appreciation in the applicant of the true scope of this technologically crucial area.
