Study of the highest energy cosmic rays with the hybrid technique of the Auger Observatory

Objective

The Pierre Auger Observatory has been conceived to measure the properties of the highest energy cosmic rays with unprecedented statistics and accuracy. A giant array of surface detectors, covering 3000km2, is viewed in coincidence by a set of 24 fluorescence detector telescopes. The southern site of Malargue, Argentina, is in advanced stage of construction and already collecting data. The concept of hybrid detection of cosmic ray showers is unique of the Auger experiment.

The proposal objectives focus on the study of cosmic rays at the highest energy, greater than 10*19eV, with the hybrid technique. First physics results of great relevance in the field are expected as outcome of the project. The University of Chicago, which is a world-class institution of long tradition in high-energy cosmic rays, will be the outgoing host institution. The expertise of the Chicago group on the ground array technique will strengthen and complete the scientific profile of the researcher.

The fellowship will give to the researcher the unique opportunity of working with Prof. Cronin, one of the founders of the Auger experiment and Nobel Prize in Physics. Complementary training in the managerial aspects of large scientific collaborations is foreseen. This research project has great chances of making the scientific career of the researcher progress towards leadership roles in the field.
