Objective

The objective of AETHER is the development of a unique and highly qualified training and research environment for fellows motivated to develop their careers into sustainable energy production. The network is composed of universities, research centres and industry partners, covering 8 countries of the ERA, all linked through their excellence in energy processes. The network is multi-sectorial, as three sectors of activity are targeted: gas turbines, combustion systems in manufacturing industry, and domestic/district heating systems.These three sectors constitute key domains in the energy production and consumption landscape, and are linked by a common technological issue: combustion systems are prone to instabilities that are not only detrimental to their performance and lifetime, but also lead to increased emissions of pollutant species, some of which are strong contributors to the greenhouse effect.The research aims at a better control of aero-acoustical and thermo-acoustical coupling issues. State-of-the-art numerical, experimental and modelling techniques will be developed, upgraded and applied under the guidance of top-rank researchers. A particularly innovative aspect of the proposed research regards the thermo-acoustical behaviour of biofuels, as at present little knowledge exists on that topic.Todays engineering challenges are multidisciplinary by nature, and the network will provide a multidisciplinary training through research, a structured course program and well-scheduled secondments. Personal coaching and distributed workshops will constitute the backbone of the training, transfer of knowledge and management activities.The training program will take advantage of the particular multi-sectorial structure of this network. The fellows will be granted a broad knowledge of the issues encountered in three main domains of energy engineering, and trained with the qualities required to perform advanced research and scientific management.
