Objective

This proposal will contribute explicitly to structuring the European Research Area by building strong cross-European links between nurses through a series of Summer Schools for Doctoral Studies. These annual events will be hosted by the Universities of Maastricht, Padova, Dublin and Turku, coordinated by the European Academy of Nursing Science (EANS). The SCF will: provide a common European perspective for doctoral nursing research; create a multinational learning environment for doctoral students in nursing; improve the quality of nursing practice by increasing the research evidence used in European nursing; enhance the opportunities for doctoral students to study, work and undertake research in other European States.

The SCF is a high quality, coherent and flexible learning programme developed through six years of experience and participant feedback from previous summer schools. It is organised around a curriculum of four course themes: A) Researching Health and Nursing in Europe; B) Developing Concepts for Researching Nursing; C) Research Methods; D) Developing a Research Career. Event participants will spend 30 hours studying each theme in a range of learning environments including: large group seminars; small group workshops; participant presentations to t heir peers and subject experts; networking groups; informal meetings such as doctoral surgeries and breakfast meetings. Recruitment processes will enable the widest possible participation from member and associated states.

The proposal will develop human re source capabilities in nursing research and create synergy in an area of European higher education, under-developed in comparison to the USA. It will contribute to the development of a common European perspective for nursing research through an advanced multinational and multidisciplinary learning environment. It explicitly addresses the gender imbalance among nursing research leaders.
