Porphyrins for two-photon absorption

Objectif

Recent work in Oxford has shown that conjugated porphyrin oligomers can exhibit remarkably strong two-photon absorption, leading to potential applications in optical data storage, microscopy and photodynamic therapy. The two-photon absorption cross-section s of some of these porphyrin oligomers are higher than those of any other known chromophore.

The aim of this project is to synthesise a range of new conjugated porphyrin oligomers and to test their two photon absorption spectra, and thus to elucidate the underlying structure-property relationships. We are particularly interested to explore the effects of increasing the porphyrin-porphyrin electronic coupling, and of adding donor and acceptor substituents.

This work will lead to new chromophores with optimised two-photon absorption behaviour. Prof. Anderson's group in Oxford has pioneered research into conjugated porphyrin oligomers and porphyrin-based optoelectronic materials for many years, and the Department of Chemistry in Oxford has world-class facilities for this research. Milosz Pawlicki recently completed his PhD in the field of porphyrin synthesis at the University of Wroclaw with Professor Lechoslaw Latos-Grazynski.

He is an expert in porphyrin chemistry, but he has no experience in the synthesis of conjugated porphyrin oligomers or porphyrin-based optoelectronic materials. He has never worked outside Poland. This Fellowship will give him the opportunity to apply his expertise in synthesis to the creation of useful new two-photon chromophores . It will provide him with experience in a new and rapidly growing area of porphyrin research and enable him to broaden his horizons.
