Non-linear Sigma Models in String Theory

Cel

Understanding gauge theories is absolutely basic for fundamental physics. However, the strong coupling behaviour of gauge theories is not well understood at present. The AdS-CFT-correspondence has opened new perspectives for the study of gauge theories. It could allow us in particular to study strongly coupled gauge theories with the help of weakly coupled string theory. However, the relevant string theories are string theories on Anti-de Sitter (AdS) spaces, which are not yet well understood themselves. This is due to a lack of understanding of the nonlinear sigma models which describe the quantum theory of strings on AdS spaces.
Our aim will be to solve the relevant sigma models exactly. Of particular interest are sigma models associated to the super groups PSU (1,1|2) and PSU (2,2|4) respectively. Understanding these two examples will have numerous applications in string theory and condensed matter physics. In order to construct and solve the nonlinear conformal sigma models in question we will need to use and to considerably extend the available methods of mathematical physics like non rational conformal field theory, representation theory of (super) groups and integrable models.
