Upgrading and introduction of sustainable diagnostic tools for the major transboundary diseases of animals in F.Y.R. Of Macedonia

Objective

Monitoring of infectious animal diseases (Foot-and-Mouth, Avian Influenza) from South East Europe/NearEast is necessary to prevent their introduction. Also, for some diseases in Macedonia (MK), vaccination policy is used (Classical Swine Fever-CSF) or monitoring (Blue Tongue).

OIE,FAO and EU, make efforts to eradicate them and implement non-vaccination policy. Placed on the geographical crossroad between Near East and Europe, MK needs improvement of diagnostic tools. Faculty of Veterinary Medicine-Skopje (FVMS) performs serological tests and PCR for some diseases. However, the diagnostics usually runs after the outbreaks (FMD/1996 Blue Tongue/2001).

Additionally, transfer from vaccination to non-vaccination policy (CSF) for future EU membership will require significant diagnostic capacities. The objective of the project is to upgrade current and introduce new methods (virus isolation, PCR,Sequencing) for these diseases. 9 local participants from FVMS and 4 EU network institutes (IAH-Pirbright-GB,Danish Institute for Food and Veterinary Research-DK, Federal Research Institute for Animal Health-Riems-D Amp Institute of Virology-Hannover Veterinary School-D)will be included.

5 Working Packages(WPs)are planed 1. Management 2. Training of local participants in EU laboratories 3. Upgrade of equipment and implementation of methods in local laboratories 4. Visit of EU experts to the local laboratories aimed on proficiency tests for implemented methods 5. Workshop for disseminating of the results to veterinary authorities and neighbour countries.

Outcomes Improved diagnostic capacity of MK-laboratories(not only for mentioned diseases, but potentially for other) Transfer of knowledge from EU to local laboratories will be obtained, which will strengthen monitoring of transboundary diseases in MK. A partnership with EU laboratories will be established which may further be improved with participation in future scientific/research projects. Dissemination of the results will be performed by a workshop.
