Objectif The objective of this project was to develop a functional programming system for the efficient support of prototyping. Investigation and definition of capabilities and uses of a functional programming system were to be examined in the following areas: -rapid prototyping -efficient code generation for functional programs to be processed on conventional sequential hardware -large programmes, binding and modularity being the main issues -persistent object management for long-term storage. A prototype system was to be developed to demonstrate the approach. The objective of the project was to develop a functional programming system for the efficient support of prototyping. Investigation and definition of capabilities and uses of a functional programming system were examined in the following areas: rapid prototyping; efficient code generation for functional programs to be processed on conventional sequential hardware; large programmes, in which binding and modularity were the main issues; persistent object management for long term storage. A study of a hospital dispensary was completed as a model application, and the development of a functional programming environment with persistent storage was undertaken.A study of a hospital dispensary was completed as a model application, and the development of a functional programming environment with persistent storage was undertaken. From the results obtained, the programming environment is being further developed by ICL. Following the withdrawal of ICL, a small traffic consultancy group CONCEPTASA of Frankfurt, joined the project. They made significant progress in collaboration with the project team towards development of a demonstrator. Good progress on the environmentand user facilities was also made. Exploitation The steps preceding industrial application are: -development of functional programming for large projects -development of a functional programming system as a prototyping environment, with application areas such as industrial process and database design.
