European summer school in cultural studies

Objective

The European Summer School in Cultural Studies offers to organise research training based on new research agendas in the field of cultural studies on a European scale. With the European Summer School in Cultural Studies we wish to supply an international forum for the development of cultural studies with a focus on new research methodologies and research organisation in this trans-disciplinary landscape.

The relevance for such a forum stems from four needs:
The need for a profiled European platform for the development and dissemination of the important, but fragmented research effort in cultural studies
The need to train doctoral candidates with background in the humanities in trans-disciplinary problems and methods in order to equip them to meet the new challenges arising in their respective fields of specialisation through the paradigm of cultural studies
The need to enter into a dialogue with the contemporary art practices where new strategies for manoeuvring in a changing cultural landscape are developed
The need to build effective and sustainable networks in this new field of research for doctoral students.

The ESSCS will contribute to the strengthening of European doctoral training in cultural studies through synergy between advanced research environments at the partner institutions. The European collaboration within the framework of the ESSCS will create a platform for innovation and systematic sharing of knowledge among graduate schools in cultural studies, including mutual recognition of qualifications and unproblematic transfer of credits between the institutions and explicit incentives to enhance structures and agendas for research and teaching at the individual institutions.
