European intensive seminars of petrology

Objective

In a series of six schools in four years, each lasting ten days, and spread through the average duration of a PhD program, young European researchers in petrology will convene with world-class scientists to learn the state of the art in the hot topics of their research. At the schools, the most recent advances in a number of disciplines related to petrology will be taught, with attention to applied aspects and potential benefits to society. A web portal will allow continuous online access of the training resources. The topics chosen (advanced techniques in petrology, petrology of the lithosphere in extensional settings, high-pressure metamorphism and subduction zones, high-temperature metamorphism and granite genesis, isotopes applied to petrological problems, and experimental petrology and rock deformation) will form a thorough basis covering some of the fundamental chapters in the training of junior researchers who are foreseen to become the backbone of the next generation of European researchers in petrology. Emphasis will be given to the applied sides of the topic treated, and its broader influence on global change and ecosystems, material sciences, and to cultural heritage preservation.

Along with the scientific lectures, practical training will have a relevant role, with visit to laboratories and analytical sessions, microscope laboratories, computer practicals, field trips and practicals in experimental petrology. In addition, each school will comprise a session for the training of all participants on the various aspects related to the building of the European Research Area. Schools will be based on an intensive, residential format that will enhance transfer of knowledge, sharing of experience, and building of contacts for future career and research developments. The website of the school will act as a permanent repository for teaching material, and as an active forum for discussion, dissemination and contact building.
