Investigation on hypoallergenic goat milk in Sicilian breeds

Obiettivo

Sicily is one of the Less Favoured regions in terms of the economical development. The full research potential of Sicily has not entirely been exploited, therefore its scientific development is weaker compared with the overall EU level.

The purpose of this Transfer of Knowledge Development project (TOK-DEV) proposed by the Animal Production section of the S.En.Fi.Mi.Zo. Department of the University of Palermo are:
- to better conserve and valorize farm animal genetic resources by investigation of possible suitability of goat milk products as alternative for humans with cow milk protein allergies and
- to apply molecular genetical technology to animal breeding schemes in combination with quantitative genetical methodologies.

This TOK-DEV project, by recruiting eight European scientific experts and seconding two researchers to Roslin Institute (U.K.) will provide up-to date knowledge and expertise in advanced techniques of genomics, bioinformatics and statistical genetics supporting the staff members and students of the S.En.Fi.Mi.Zo. Department in their specialized scientific development. Until recently, the genetic resources collected by the S.En.Fi.Mi.Zo. Department were analyzed in European research centres outside Sicily. This has implied a passive attitude of Sicilian research and lack of development of available research competencies.

The TOK-DEV project will help the S.En.Fi.Mi.Zo. Department to become more competitive in the European research area, to protect European farm animal resources, and to improve collaborations in a constructive way. The exchange of incoming and outgoing researchers will lead to intensification of international co-operation in the areas of genomics and bioinformatics in this field. This will pave the way to the creation of a high-level training centre in the field of animal genomics and bioinformatics in a less developed region.
