Constraint reasoning extended to enhance decision support

Objective

The Marie Curie Transfer of Knowledge project, "Constraint Reasoning Extended to Enhance Decision Support" (acronym CREEDS), will be hosted by the Cork Constraint Computation Centre (4C), Department of Computer Science, University College Cork, Cork, Ireland. Constraint programming is a technology for solving hard combinatorial problems that arise repeatedly in fields such as production scheduling, product design, and supply chain management. 4C is a leading centre for research in this area and is dedicated to making the technology more accessible as well as furthering it through basic research.
The purpose of CREEDS is to allow the Centre to extend the scope of its endeavours by gaining knowledge and competence in the field of Decision Support Systems. At the same time that it extends its expertise in this manner, the Centre will begin to integrate constraint-based reasoning and decision support technology in order to advance research in decision support through the infusion of this new technology.
Researchers will be recruited for this project from fields outside constraint programming that represent major facets of decision support systems. These include areas such as dynamic systems analysis, psychology of decision making, intelligent user interfaces, and group decision making. These researchers will instruct 4C staff in their respective fields of expertise and carry out original research on related topics in decision support. In addition, two major programming projects will serve as platforms for introducing and evaluating new ideas in these areas, as well as supporting specific lines of research such as the psychology of decision making in the context of decision support systems. Each platform is targeted for a specific type of end user (e.g. a customer or technical manager), to facilitate the transfer of basic research to specific applications.
