Objetivo The aim of the project is to study differences and similarities between existing models of social policy and reveal to what extent they are relevant to ongoing demographic, social, economic and political changes in new and old members of the European Community and its new nearest neighbours. Changing patterns in generation-specific family formation (marriage, partnerships, separation, and tempo of births), values and attitudes to gender relations and the family, as well as the socio-economic position of families, will be measured on the basis of a comparative survey. The study will focus on two EU countries - France and Lithuania - and two NIS countries - Georgia and Russia - where such a comparative survey has been or is being done. The extensive and fast-paced demographic and societal changes that have occurred reflect the momentous big changes taking place in the societies of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet countries. Political changes have produced sweeping social transformations that are very difficult to describe. The programme will be based on a comparative use of Gender and Generation Surveys (GGS) in the four countries. The research programme includes the following topics: political changes, demographic changes and generations; the economic dimension of the family, and its transformations with political changes; social policies and demographic trends; a specific overview of Europe's new borders - new EU countries and nearest neighbours.
