Development of software applications and Monte Carlo study of CP-violating and rare decays at LHCb

Objective

LHCb is an experiment designed to challenge the Standard Model (SM) explanation of CP violation in the b quark system. Exploiting the large number of b-hadrons produced at the LHC, LHCb will make precise measurements of SM parameters and an exhaustive search for physics beyond the SM. This proposal is targeted to the development of application software for the calorimeter and muon sub-detectors of LHCb. Furthermore, it includes the development of simulation studies and preparation for the analysis of CP-violating B decays sensitive to the angles of the Unitarity Triangle and of rare penguin decays of B mesons. In particular we will study: - Bd decays into rho pi and rho rho to extract the angle alpha; - Bs decays into J/psi eta to extract the phase of Bs mixing; - Dalitz plot of Bd decays to DK* to extract the angle gamma; - Radiative penguin decays of B mesons into K* gamma, rho gamma, omega gamma and phi gamma, as well as electromagnetic penguin Bs decay into phi mu mu; - selected Bc decays to precisely measure the mass and lifetime of the Bc meson.
