Obiettivo The proposed joint research project is motivated by the need to improve the computer security of scientific sites, in particular those involved in Grid-related activities. The option taken is that of an integrated approach to site security, encompassing three essential dimensions: the technical aspects, the administrative aspects, and the educational aspects. This approach is called ISS: Integrated Site Security. Site Security is complementary to what is generally referred to as Grid Security, which is more focussed on inter-site security. The project will capitalize on the experience gained on ISSeG, a project funded by the European Union as part of the EU 6th framework programme, and involving CERN, the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe (FZK), Council for the Central Laboratory of the Research Councils (CCLRC), and Communication & Systèmes (CS). ISSeG-NIS will be formed of the following phases: 1. The project will first define for each of the NIS sites part of the project the most appropriate site security policy. 2. An audit of the site security mechanisms will be performed on each site. The audit will be based on the methodology developed by the EU ISSeG project. 3. A concrete implementation plan to improved site security and integration of the various components will be laid down. As appropriate, the plan may be adapted to the specific cases of each of the NIS sites. 4. The next phase will be the deployment of the Integrated Site Security on each site. The deployment will be followed by a second post-deployment audit of the site security in order to evaluate and measure the result. 5. The final step will be to document the lessons learnt from adapting the ISS to NIS environments. The outcome will be a set of recommendations and guidelines for further deployments to other NIS sites. The results of this project will allow NIS sites to deploy ISS technology and, thus, to get effective and secure way for integrating in the European GRID instrustructures.
