Numerical analysis of 3D seismic wave propagation using modal summation, finite elements and finite difference methods

Ziel

PROJECT SUMMARY It is proposed to implement a hybrid method, based on coupling analytical and numerical solutions, for simulating 3-dimensional seismic wave propagation in a heterogeneous anelastic half-space. The numerical solution based on finite element method will be derived using the domain decomposition technique, which allows us running the computations on parallel machines. This is especially critical when large-scale problems are approached with many degrees-of-freedom and large stiffness matrices. The FETI method - an iterative sub-structuring technique where Lagrange multipliers are used to enforce continuity conditions across the sub-domain interface - is proposed to implement in the frame of the research project. The need for FETI (finite element tear and interconnect) methods has been motivated by recent developments, which include parallel computations based on sub-structural domain decomposition. The project output will be: (i) methodology and software tool for simulating response of anelastic media to seismic input based on analytical method and coupling it with the numerical solution of the response of the surface layers based on finite element method, (ii) computer clusters installed at the research facilities running the application. The algorithms will be implemented in the software packages based on FORTRAN, C, and MATLAB (OCTAVE). The newly created computational infrastructure will allow research teams to further generalize and expand research in computational mechanics.
