Development of combined technologies for the decontamination of organic pollutants from aquatic compartments: use of solar energy and immobilized cells (DECOTECH)

Objetivo

The project will focus on the development of combined photochemical and biochemical technologies for the decontamination of highly toxic organic pollutants in water environment. Two types of integrated reactors will be tested: The first system combines successive photocatalytic (iron salts, TiO2 and catalytic membranes) and microbiological (Rhodococcus rhodochrous) processes, the second combines simultaneous photo- and biodegradation processes (FeNTA complex + light + R. rhodochrous). In both cases R. rhodochrous cells immobilized in alginate beads or inorganic supports (bentonite, zeolite, keramzite) will be used. The first objective is to set up these reactors and to evaluate their efficiency in term of degradation (Tasks 1, 2 and 3). The second objective is to get specific knowledge about mechanisms involved in these processes; for that three directions of research have been chosen: i) the structure of intermediates of the degradative pathways will be determined by NMR and MS (task 3) ii) the metabolic state of bacteria will be investigated by in vivo 31P NMR during the photo-biotransformation processes (task 4). iii) ESR will be performed to monitor the formation of radical species during the photo-biotransformation processes (task 5). Results will involve the determination of the detailed mechanisms of the degradation processes and the set-up of efficient and innovative reactors. Our project will exemplarily focus on benzothiazole derivatives, a group of xenobiotics which are manufactured world-wide for a variety of applications: pesticides, antialgal agents, chemotherapeutics, vulcanisation accelerators. They are detected in industrial and municipal wastewater treatment plants and in various environmental compartments. Moreover, their limited biodegradability and potential toxicity are of importance for aquatic environment. The 6 teams involved in this project (two French, one German and three Moldovan teams) have already experience in the field of research of decontamination of water, in particular water polluted by benzothiazoles. These teams have already established a fruitful collaboration for over five years, and have good experience in joint research, testified by the unique results obtained and joint publications. Moldovan and French teams already conducted common projects during a NATO contract (2002-2004), French embassy contract (2005) and 5 month CNRS grant (2005) for Moldovan researcher. Moreover 2 PhD students will be shared between different teams. In addition, each team has a specific scientific expertise complementary to each other, including microbiology, photochemistry, analytical chemistry (MS, NMR, ESR, HPLC), technologies of water decontamination. Exchange of results and management will imply e-mail exchange, 3 meetings (France, Germany and Moldova), 3 visits of Moldovan researchers in France, writing of 2 reports (intermediate and final), diffusion of information in scientific papers, patents and conferences.
