Childhood and youth transitions in a transforming society: the case of Moldova

Obiettivo

This research combines qualitative and quantiative methods to examine the impact of the transformation in Moldova on young people aged 16 to 30 years. Since 1991 Moldva has experenced a dramatic decline in economic and social well being becoming by far the poorest country in Europe with over a third of its population estimated to be working abroad as migrant labourers. The study will research the social quality of Moldova in terms of its impact on the lives of young people using the skills of sociologists, social psychologists and public policy experts. This is an important issue to study, as Moldova's social and economic regeneration and the establishment of sustainable human development will depend on the dynamism and engagement of its young people. The main aim of the research is to provide an understanding of how young people in Moldova make sense of their lives in the context of the transformation and what their hopes and aspirations are for their own and their countries future and to make policy recommendations. It utilises as a heuristic framework the Social Quality model, which recognises the dynamic relationship between structure and agency - between objective socio-economic structures and individual subjective understanding. There are four quadrants to social quality - economic security, social cohesion, social inclusion and social and cultural empowerment. The study employs two stages: the first stage is a representative sample survey of 2000 young people aged 16 - 30 years: and the second stage is case studies utilizing in depth interviews, focus groups and essays in a major city, a predominantly rural area and a small town. The project aims to discover the impact of the transformation on the lives of young people and their aspirations and hopes for the future. The research will produce new empirical knowledge, going well beyond what is already known, about the impact of the transformation on young people of Moldova and their hopes and aspirations for the future where no previous comparable research has been carried out. It will develop an understanding of the ways in which young people's agency is influenced by the impact that the transformation has had on their country and their lives, the place and role of young people in a transforming society and their participation in the social, economic and political life of the country. It will provide new information on young people who are vital to the future development of Moldova. The policy implications of the research will be highlighted and disseminated within Moldova and more generally.
