Prototype development for the high rate TOF detector of the CBM experiment

Cel

The INTAS-GSI RPC project aims to contribute to the development and the realisation of the CBM time-of-flight detector that has to deliver excellent time resolution (better than 80ps) with high efficiency under very demanding conditions, e.g. at single particle count rates of up to 20kHz/cm2. The project is part of the European effort to design an experiment addressing the properties of strongly interacting systems at the highest possible baryon density.

For the necessary particle identification systems detailed simulations and RPC developments will be pursued to address the following questions:
1) Determination of the most appropriate RPC structure as function of the laboratory angle by means of Monte Carlo simulations,
2) Optimisation of resistive electrode materials with respect to RPC performance and cost,
3) Design, construction and test of high granulartity multigap RPC's to meet the CBM TOF detector requirements in the high rate environment,
4) Test of existing variants of front- end electronics to propose and initiate an ASIC for the RPC of the CBM TOF detector.

The results of the project are of paramount importance to final design of the TOF-wall of the CBM experiment.
