Copper-ore deposits in volcano-plutonic complexes of the Lesser Caucasus: their genesis and prospecting signs

Objectif

In the Lesser Caucasus commercial reserves of ores in most copper deposits are now practically exhausted. Discovery of new deposits demands working out efficient techniques of their prospecting and exploration. For that reason the authors of the Project raised the following main objectives: 1) reconstruction of volcanostructures enclosing mineralization; 2) establishing paragenetic relations between ores and magmatism; 3) construction of specialized prognostication maps (1:50 000 - 1:25 000 scale) for copper ores of the region; 4) creation of geological-genetic and prospecting models for volcanogenic and porphyry copper deposits; 5) evaluation of remaining copper ore reserves in the Lesser Caucasus. To achieve the above objectives the following scientific-practical tasks should be solved: Task 1 - Collecting and processing data on volcanogenic deposits of Upper Cretaceous back-arc volcanostructures. Task 2 - Collection and prospecting data on volcanogenic copper and porphyry copper deposits of the Lesser Caucasian paleoislandarc. The first two tasks will be tested in Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia (the Somkhito-Karabakh and Bolnisi-Kazakh zones). Task 3 - Collection and processing data on molybdenum- and copper-molybdenum porphyry deposits of Azerbaijan and Armenia, and creation of genetic and exploration models of porphyry systems, which will be tested within areas of development of syenitic and granodioritic collisional-type intrusions in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia (Adjara). Task 4 - Assesment of copper potential of the Lesser Caucasus, working out recommendations for the study and development of promising copper-bearing areas. The works on the project will include the following kinds of laboratory investigations: microscoping study of rocks and ores; atomic-absorptional analyses on copper, gold and accompanying elements; roentgen-structural phase analysis; thermobarogeochemical and isotopic study. Mapping will be carried out using computer cartography techniques; metallogenic map of the Lesser Caucasus (1:500 000) and geological-structural and volcanological maps of individual copper-bearing areas (1:50 000 and 1:25 000 scale) will be digitized with the help of the computer program Arc GIS 9.0. The results obtained in the course of project implementation will contribute to such branches of earth sciences as metallogeny and volcanism. They will be also of practical significance and used in the search for new deposits of non-ferrous metals in the Lesser Caucasus.
