Increased productivity and safety of European coalmines by advanced techniques and planning tools enabling an improved strata control of the face-roadway junction

Objective

Longwall face ends are the most vulnerable areas of hard coal mines for injuries and production delays. They are also the most difficult to support. Recently several major falls of ground and major face-end/roadway deformations have occurred in European mines showing that such incidents are often caused by misjudgement of faulted zones, failing ribs and inappropriate support measure choices at the planning stage.

The project focuses on the development of reliable planning tools and advanced support techniques for face roadway junctions to enable strata control of this critical location. This will have a considerable impact on the productivity and safety of European Coal mines.
