Objective The objective of the FIRES project is to develop and validate a prototype of a CAD/CAM part modeller focusing on the requirements of 3-D complex parts. The approach will be to enhance the functionality and integration of existing solutions to include feature-based parts modelling, computer-aided process planning (CAPP) using knowledge-based techniques, and quality assurance based on a finite element (FE) simulation of part deformation during manufacture. A user-extensible set of features will be integrated with conventional boundary representation (B-rep) geometric modelling. The feature database will use object oriented database technology to represent the geometry, attributes and semantics associated with features. Communications between feature modelling and both analysis and process planning will be by means of a neutral part model. A neutral process plan model will represent process plans generated by FIRES. The model will provide a formal representation of manufacturing processes that will be interfaced with a CAM system for automatic generation of numerical control information for machining. The use of STEP as a basis for both the part model and the process plan model is expected to provide input to the development of international standards. Validation of the software will be carried out by demonstrating the results on 3D milled parts with high-precision manufacturing requirements. Further evaluation will be carried out using examples drawn from components and tooling for the automotive industry. The project results will be incorporated in software marketed by vendor members of the consortium.
