Objetivo The objective of the LYNX project is to deliver an Enhanced Multimedia Object System for networked multimedia applications. A multimedia object-oriented system will be delivered allowing distributed applications developers to access many different types of servers.Lynx is a three year collaborative project in which enhanced multimedia object system has been built providing powerful object orietated support for the development and integration of distributed, networked multimedia applicationsThe LYNX system is based on three main components:COSMOS: an ODMG compliant ODBMS from Trans TOOLs with enhanced support fro long multimedia data, as required fro the storage of real time video and audio digital data. Cosmoa provides an object model and a declarative query language. It supports C++ and is fully portable to a wide range of UNIX platforms.ORBIX: a CORBA compliant object request broker. It provides a uniform view of the system to application developers, having the LYNX servers as one typeof component. Transparent access to objects stored in different systems is provided.ASP500: A Unix server, optmized for the real time handling of multimedia data. MultimediaI/O client devices directly communicate with the ASP500 via a high speed network under the control of ODBMS.A pilot system in the health care field has been implemented not only to demonstrate the technical achievements of the project, but also to show the commercial advantages of using the LYNX systemThe kernel of the system will be object data server (ODS), which is an object-oriented database management system with enhanced support for large multimedia data, as required for the storage of real-time video and audio. The ODS provides a Canonical Model and Declarative Query Language. It supports C++ and will be fully portable to a wide range of Unix platforms with clients running on either Unix or Windows machines. The hardware support for the storage and retrieval of multimedia data will be provided by the Object Storage Processor (OSP). This is a low-cost multiprocessor machine which acts as a real-time video and audio server, and directly communicates with the multimedia I/O client devices, under the control of the ODBMS. A CORBA-compliant Object Request Broker will be used to provide applications with a uniform view of the system with the multimedia servers as one type of component (object). Transparent access to objects stored in different systems will be provided.
