Objective

OBJECTIVES AND EXPECTED ACHIEVEMENTS
The aim of this proposal is the acquisition of the appropriate molecular and cellular tools that will enable to address the issues of the increased lipid deposition in the tissues of farmed fish and the apparent dietary requirement of many of the farmed fish species for n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Both of these issues are of primary concern for the modem intensive aquaculture industry. To this end, it is proposed to study the function and mode of action of the Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptors (PPARs) in fish. PPARs are a class of ligand activated transducer proteins belonging to the nuclear hormone receptor (NHR) superfamily. PPARs are recognised as key regulators of both arms of lipid homeostasis, i.e. fatty acid oxidation (catabolism) and triglyceride accumulation (adipogenesis), in higher vertebrates. Ligands for the mammalian and amphibian PPARs have been identified and they include natural fatty acids.
