Development of cost-effective high energy density plastic li-ion battery for portable computers (PLASTIC LI-ION BATTERY)

Ziel

The project addresses the development of a new, cost-effective process for the manufacture of lithium-ion polymer batteries, initially as a power source for portable applications, with potential penetration into higher energy sectors (incl. EV's) within 3-5 years.

The prime goal is to deliver a rechargeable battery pack (a 12V/4Ah module) for a portable computer with an energy density of 200 Wh/kg for 500 cycles. Battery management will be included to give safe operation. Additional goals include a 50% reduction in process costs; a 20% reduction in materials costs; and the use of less organic solvents in the process, resulting in significantly reduced emissions.

The battery comprises a laminate of plastic electrodes (anode and cathode) separated by a polymer electrolyte: all three components are to be fabricated as tapes through a novel extrusion process, combined with in-line electrolyte impregnation into both electrode- and electrolyte-tapes.
