Effect of Hypoxia on fish locomotion, foraging and escape performance

Objectif

The project will investigate the effect of hypoxia on biological processes involved in fundamental phases of the prey-predator relationships. Investigations will be conducted in two commercially relevant fish species: European sea bass and grey mullet which inhabit Mediterranean lagoons where hypoxic episodes occur regularly. Escape. Feeding and locomotor performance at various levels of oxygenation (100. 50. 20% oxygen saturation) will be studied. Data obtained in the two species will be compared to provide information oil the species-specific features of hypoxia tolerance.

Escape performance is will be assessed by. measuring a set of characteristics of the locomotion performance and the sensivity to startling stimuli. The effect of hypoxia on feeding will be estimated in grey mullet (detritivore) foraging on a benthic substrate and in sea bass (predator) feeding on grey mullet juveniles. Predator error rate.
