Objective The project aims at developing a flexible, compact, microstructured trapping device for conducting various precision experiments with single cold (T≈mK) molecular ions. Several control tools will be established in the view of realizing a “cold chemistry lab on a chip”. For this purpose the following steps are required: (1) designing and constructing a novel type of ion trap, a microtrap, tailored towards the sympathetic cooling of molecular ions, with an open geometry and increased controllability of the trapping potentials; (2) perfecting routine experimental techniques: ion loading, trapping, laser- and sympathetic cooling; (3) establishing protocols for state preparation and mass spectrometry of the sympathetically-cooled ions in the trap; and, finally, (4) demonstrating the potential of the system through the implementation of optical preparation and interrogation protocols of cold molecular ions and cold chemistry experiments.
