Chemicircus – Science Outreach through Contemporary Circus: a fun far-fetched circus of chemistry

Objectif

The purpose of the “CHEMICIRCUS” initiative is to continue to tackling the existing stereotypes of researchers and bringing closer to one another researchers and public at large in order to make the latter aware of the important role and benefits resulting from the researcher's job to their daily life and well being. The 2011 event will have a special focus in Chemistry, as it is the International Year of Chemistry, and as the project intents to contribute to the recognition of the contributions of chemistry to the well-being of humankind, the development of human knowledge, the advancement of economic progress and promotion of a healthier environment. The CHEMICIRCUS” initiative will employ fun activities to raise public awareness and appreciation of science and scientific process through contemporary circus (nouveau cirque), a performing art in which a theme is conveyed through traditional circus skills.
A high impact event will take place in a community school in the center of Porto, where at least 4,500 participants are expected, more than 100,000 people from numerous sectors are estimated to be aware of the event and at least 100 researchers, are expected to be directly and indirectly involved in the delivery of the event.
The programme of activities will include a balanced combination of science-linked activities and festive ones. The activities will focus on the public at large, allowing a direct contact with researchers through interactive, creative, artistic and enjoyable activities, highlighting the message that researchers are “ordinary” people. All the activities will be evaluated for their impact on the public image of science research and scientists, through questionnaires, interviews, direct observation and online feedback. Benefiting from its privileged know-how (acquired with the coordination of the Portuguese editions of RN 07, 08, 09 and 2010) and its experienced team, Inova+ is ideally situated to organise the 2011 RN edition in Portugal.
