The Researchers’ Night 2011 in Norway

Objective

"The Researchers' Night coincides from the very start with the Norwegian Science Week, “Forskningsdagene” (23th Sept– 2rd Oct 2011) of which it constitutes a particular momentum. The Research Council of Norway has successfully organised the Norwegian RN-project for the last six years, with events provided locally by subcontractors from the “Forskningsdagene” network selected after competition. This allows both events to benefit from synergies and complementarities, in particular regarding public awareness. The aim for this proposal is to continue the previous successes. “Forskningsdagene” is national, annual and well established. The events are well covered by media.

The activities will take place from north to south in a total of 13 events in 10 locations. They will reach broad target groups and maintain an enjoyable and attractive range of activities that includes two Researchers’ Idol competitions, four open Science Centres, four large youth gatherings, a night at the aquarium, informal talks, and ”hands-on” experiments, - all featuring ”real science”. Four European corner events will be set up. The RCN expects that the events will all contribute to improve public and political understanding of what researchers do, and that the researchers are of utmost importance for creating the knowledge base needed to facilitate innovation and sustainable, global competitive industry in high-cost Europe. Researchers will be “de-mystified"", their passion and fascination for research will be demonstrated in settings allowing direct involvement of the public.

The awareness campaigns with advertisements, material distributed, and media coverage were found to reach an estimated 32.9 mill and 6.4 mill people, respectively in 2010. In our population of 4.9 mill people, this is outstanding. The events in 2011 are chosen with potential audience in mind (expected number 6500). A public survey to measure the average public’s perception of researchers and research will be carried out."
