Final Report - NANO UB-SOURCES (Ultra-broad bandwidth light sources based on nano-structuring devices)

Modern medicine emphasises the importance of diagnostic techniques that detect disease in its early stage, when treatment is most effective and irreversible damage can be prevented or delayed. Now, new light source technologies developed by the NANO UB-Sources project promises to enable unprecedented early diagnosis.

This final report of the NANO UB-Sources project provides a brief overview of the two paths investigated to achieve a wide optical bandwidth without compromising on the light beam quality: multi-layer quantum dots structures and non-linear photonic crystal fibres. It concludes with a presentation of the resulting improvements in time-resolved spectroscopy and optical coherence tomography (OCT), a non-invasive imaging technology.
