Final Report - DIAMOND (The Development of an Innovative, Accurate, Monolithic, CVD Diamond Array based Radiation Dosimeter System)

DIAMOND was a European funded project whose ultimate aim was to develop an innovative, accurate, monolithic, Chemical vapour deposition (CVD) diamond array-based radiation dosimeter system. The system would improve the levels of accuracy, and the performance required by Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) technology and would help Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to open a new market and meet market needs. Such a system included three main challenges, namely the development of the CVD diamond array detectors, the development of advanced read-out electronics and integration of the system main components.

An array of one dimension (1D), size of 50 detectors with a resolution of 500 microns was integrated into the electronics read-out. A major part of the dosimeter specifications was met: short priming, short rise time, short decay time. Due to time limitations it was not possible to fully characterise these dosimeters for dose and dose-rate dependence and phonon energy dependence, so it is not possible to mention that the full specification has been achieved.
