Final Report - TRIAS (Sustainability Impact Assessment of Strategies Integrating Transport, Technology and Energy Scenarios)

Project ID: 12534
Funded under: FP6-SUSTDEV

This report draws on work undertaken by the TRIAS project which was funded under the European Commission's Sixth Research Framework Programme. Specifically, a number of scenarios was developed for Europe describing the diffusion of biofuels into the transport markets as well as a shift of the transport system towards hydrogen until 2030 and 2050. TRIAS integrated four different models which together cover the multi-facetted impacts of a large scale change.

The report briefly describes the overall project structure, the four models, the base scenario and a number of alternative scenarios on how to foster and manage a shift towards new fuels: a carbon tax-funded shift, a shift subsidised by national funds and an accelerated shift where Europe would be the first world region to introduce hydrogen for transport on a large scale. For these scenarios an integrated sustainability impact assessment was carried out providing insights into structural changes to the vehicle fleets and a potential demand for different energy carriers and changes.
