Final Report - MAGDOT (Bridging atomistic to continuum - multiscale investigation of self-assembling magnetic dots during Epitaxil growth)

This is the final report of the MAGDOT project. Funded under the European Community's Sixth Framework Programme, MAGDOT aimed to develop the nanoscale self-assembly of magnetic dots during the growing a crystalline film.

The main objectives was to improve the understanding of the important materials issues governing nanoscale self-assembly, and to develop models that enable the design of novel super-high density magnetic storage materials, such as FePt and CoPt. A major challenge in creating such materials is that a regular pattern of nano-sized magnetic dots is needed.

Experts from both the European Union and the United States collaborated to answer questions such as how the interplay between kinetic and thermodynamic effects leads to nanostructure formation and what the controlling factors of the spatial and size distributions are. The work is not only of fundamental interest but can also provide the integrated computational models needed to produce large scale self-organised arrays of magnetic dots.
