Final Report - MICROSCAN (Development of comprehensive in-line quality control system for printed circuit board assemblies)

This is the final activity report of the MICROSCAN project. Funded by the European Commission under the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6), the core task of the MICROSCAN project was the production of a powerful tool in the total quality control of printed circuit board (PCB) assemblies, which could also reduce the cost of the manufacturing process and would provide an impetus to the PCB industry in Europe. It would greatly improve the employment prospects of the region as well as improve the quality of life, initially for Europe but also worldwide.

In addition to the above, this project aided in the introduction of lead-free solders by developing the non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques on a selection of lead-free samples and provided genuine environmental benefits.

The specific document provides a summary of the overall project objectives and a thorough overview of the work performed and also describes the novel achievements of the project. MICROSCAN overcame the limitations to the NDT techniques and equipment, developed new techniques for X-ray detection, developed novel improvements for AOI and innovative and novel acoustic and thermal techniques. It was intended that the developed systems would be combined with a PCB assembly system to produce new in-line inspections, providing full quality control of PCB assemblies.
