Final Report - PUMPSEA (Peri-urban mangroves forests as filters and potential phytoremediators of domestic sewage in East Africa)

Project ID: 510863
Funded under: FP6-INCO

Peri-urban coastal areas of the developing world receive extensive amounts of untreated sewage, which is typically discharged into mangrove forests that filter wastewater, thus limiting coastal pollution.

The main objective of the EU-funded PUMPSEA project was to demonstrate the ecological and economical service that peri-urban mangroves provide and offer innovative solutions for the exploitation and management of this quality.

This final activity report provides an overview of the project objectives and analyses the undertaken activities and the methodologies that were implemented for the provision of viable recommendations and practices. Moreover, it compares the project proposals to the state of the art and refers to the derived conclusions. The document closes with an overview of the undertaken dissemination activities.
