Final Report - SEDBARCAH (Sediment biobarriers for chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons in groundwater reaching surface water)

Project ID: 511254
Funded under: FP6-SUSTDEV

Polluted groundwater in urban and industrial areas often represents a continuous source of diffuse pollution of surface water. This phenomenon could be mitigated by the sediment layer that acts as a filter and biobarrier between surface and groundwater; however relevant knowledge remains scarce.

The EU-funded SEDBARCAH project aimed to investigate the potential of the sediment zone to prevent the infiltration of Chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons (CAH) into surface water and examine the potential to exploit this zone against groundwater contamination.

This final activity report summarises the rationale behind SEDBARCAH and analyses its specific objectives. Moreover, it highlights the obtained results and refers to the project exploitable outcomes.
