Final Report - LASER-MEM (Develop methods of manufacturing customized flexible membranes using laser technology)

Project ID: 512955
Funded under: FP6-SME

Polymer membranes are used for many industrial and municipal applications to separate solids such as activated sludge from fluids like waste water. Apart from membranes for very special applications all standard membranes for basic applications are imported from outside Europe like the United States, Canada and Japan. The membranes exhibit properties that are not suitable for many applications clog up easily and are unreliable are expensive to maintain as they need frequent cleaning material has a fixed structure cannot be customised easily to meet the needs of different applications.

Manufacturing processes are based on expensive continuous methods licenses to manufacture are not available to European Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The LASER-MEM project used a different method of manufacture to overcome all the disadvantages of inherent in existing products. Laser technology was developed to enable membranes to be created from low cost raw material, using a process that can be implemented by SMEs.

The final report provides a summary of the overall project objectives, the main objectives of the work programmes, the approaches employed during the course of the project among other workshops and the results of the development of the project which include:
- laser drilling system (membrane handling platform, control unit, etc.);
- new experience in laser optics design and manufacture;
- a lot of new experiences about the laser ablating process;
- experience in membrane design;
- good results concerning filtration and aeration application.

The main application of LASER-MEM was wastewater treatment and the potential for use in many other areas such as health, chemical, petrochemical, and food processing industries is virtually unlimited.

However, as the membranes have not yet been implemented in the market there is no obvious impact of the project on the filtration industry sector in general and wastewater treatment sector in specia
