Final Report - CERTCOST (Economic analysis of certification systems for organic food and farming)

With the ongoing growth of the organic sector and the spread of organic production across the European Union (EU), the field of organic certification has become a maze of competing labels and logos, involving different private and public standards, in addition to European law. The overall objective of the CERTCOST project was to provide research based recommendations to improve organic food certification systems in Europe in terms of efficiency, transparency, and cost effectiveness. The project represented a major effort of 11 European institutions from 7 European countries and its consortium consisted out of universities, research centres as well as control bodies involved in organic certification.

The final report describes the objectives of the project, the main results achieved and their potential impact and use. The CERTCOST project contributed to greater efficiency of certification system, better regulation, and increase in the competitiveness of the European organic farming sector.
