Periodic Report 2 - NANOPHOTO (Targeted nanosystems for improving photodynamic therapy and diagnosis of cancer)

This is the periodic report for the NANOPHOTO project which received funding under the European Commission (EC)'s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). The project main aim was to engineer nanocarriers able to deliver drugs selectively to cancer cells. In particular, the delivery of the photosensitising drug meta-tetrahydroxyphenyl chlorine (mTHPC, temoporfin) used in photodynamic therapy (PDT) was studied. The aim was to identify a nanosystem-based formulation of mTHPC that increases the selectivity and diminishes the side effects of PDT therefore making the treatment more acceptable to the patients.

The report shows that the studies carried out produced new liposomal mTHPC formulations that improve substantially and from various points of view, the treatment of cancer with PDT. Based on this, Biolitec is contacting contract manufacturing organisations (CMOs) for the manufacturing of large batches of liposomal mTHPC formulation under GMP-conditions. Biolitec is also planning to start the drug approval procedure for the European countries and to schedule phase I and IIa clinical trials with mTHPC liposomal formulation.
