Periodic Report - PEMPHIGUS (Pemphigus - from autoimmunity to disease)

Project ID: 200515
Funded under: FP7-HEALTH

This is the second periodic report for the PEMPHIGUS project which received funding under the European Commission's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). The main objectives of this period include the development of preclinical animal models, in vitro characterisation of autoreactive T and B lymphocytes in patients, identification of target structures of the autoimmune response in pemphigus, signalling events in keratinocytes upon binding of autoantibodies (autoAb) and finally a clinical prospective investigation aiming at validating two clinical severity scores in Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) patients.

The report covers the main aims of the project highlighting the roles of autoreactive T and B cells in the autoimmune pathogenesis of pemphigus, as well as of desmoglein 3 (Dsg3) transgenic mouse that should add significant results to the findings obtained in the HLA class II transgenic animals. It goes on with a description of the work performed since the beginning of the project and the main results achieved. The report concludes with the expected final results and their potential impact and use.
