Project Report - GIACS (General Integration of the Applications of Complexity in Science)

Project ID: 12380
Funded under: FP6-POLICIES

New and emerging science and technology (NEST) was initiative under the European Commission (EC)'s Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) to promote highly interdisciplinary, high-risk research. NEST launched a number of focussed 'PATHFINDER' initiatives, including 'Tackling complexity in science'. This initiative aimed to encourage the development and transfer from one area of science to another of solutions and approaches to concrete complex real-world problems.

The initiative undertook two calls for proposals (2004 and 2006) which resulted in the funding of 23 Specific Targeted Research Projects (STREP) and one Coordination Action (CA), General integration of the application of complexity in science (GIACS), amounting to approximately EUR 35 million worth of new research funding.

The goal of GIACS was to serve as a forum to bring the research of these research projects together and help in their relationship with the ongoing research in the field of complexity in Europe and the rest of world. The current report is one of the deliverables of GIACS and serves to speculate about the future directions and opportunities of complexity research in the long term.
